A New Year – A Familiar Look
The trends change from year to year and are visible first on the fashion runway. The designers start pulling the concepts and colors from the runway into the home designs creating the trends for the year. The most unique designs may quickly be abandoned or fade out because they weren’t embraced by the homeowners. Successful trends for homeowners blend with their personality and style creating a comfortable space reflecting a personal story. Most of us will not change our furnishings based on a new trend. However, we add those elements to our current style. The elements such as furniture, accents, colors, and materials are easily changed. As we are exploring the elements for 2023, you will see some familiar looks and styles returning.
An interrupted supply chain opened a new opportunity for designers and homeowners. Yes – we are still feeling the effects of COVID. Designers have become more resourceful and creative utilizing auction houses, vintage sellers, and local antique shops to find those individually unique pieces to integrate into the homes. Upcycling, which is recovering objects and diverting them from their original function and/or refurbishing those antiques and salvaged pieces is a big hit.
More than ever people want to blend aesthetics by adding a vintage item to their current style. To avoid the fast home furnishings cycle where you buy what you see or wait months, the ability to use existing pieces reduces the manufacturing, shipping, and packaging materials. The mixture of modern and restyled furniture is growing as it provides a mix of styles. One way to achieve that mix is by utilizing heirlooms. The homeowner has a personal connection to the family heirloom pieces. So now more than ever, homeowners are hanging on to those vintage pieces for nostalgia. It makes a great conversation piece as well. According to mydomaine.com the vintage pieces add a sense of heritage, authenticity, and character to a home.
Art is the perfect way to integrate a vintage piece into the home. Other pieces such as cabinets, ceramics, and collectibles displayed in a modern fashion are creating the personal nostalgia homeowners are looking for. Designers are seeing surreal abstract art with vintage flair in the collections. The vintage flair is all about the colorful shades.
With words like abstract, vintage, and nostalgic. It is no surprise that the colors are much more dramatic. Pantones top colors for 2023 are Fiery Red, Beetroot Purple, Peach Pink, Empire Yellow, and Tangelo. The vibrant colors will be visible in accent pieces throughout the home. Designers are pulling the vibrant colors from a piece of art and accenting with pillows, throws and paint hues.
Shocker, velvet is a textile favorite this year. It will be visible in the furnishings, cushions, curtains, and other elements that we like to touch. Of course, in the trendy colors it will bring a vintage side to our interiors, such as a velvet sofa.
It does not all have to be dramatic. As we are adding these trends to our homes, it is very easy to utilize our neutral colors and then accent with contrasting colors to change the overall feel in a room. You will see bright and soft elements of minimalism such as white and soft green tones in the base. Energizing shades of deep greens, warm deep orange tones such as rust or terracotta, rich reddish brown, slate gray, amethyst. jeweled toned blue and eggplant integrated into the accent elements.
Promote the ability to express yourself and share your personality with wallpaper. Awww, do you hesitate? Fun fact from the wallcoveringinstallers.org: most vinyl wallcoverings can retain their original beauty and performance characteristics for at least fifteen years, whereas a painted surface requires repainting approximately every three years. I never promote keeping any wall covering for fifteen years, but to change a style simply and with little effort I do promote. Whether it is one accent wall or a whole room, it is a great option. The current trend for wallpaper is limitless with large patterns or textures, flowers, vegetation, birds, and forest animals, and variations of dark or pale colors.
There will always be a natural element to the trends. The earthy feel of stone and wood. The elements are seen throughout the home, with an emphasis on black wood. Very beautiful materials are being utilized such as split-face travertine, various colored marble in deep rich greens, browns, and burgundy. The more dramatic the veining the better. For the last two years the mushroom motif has been taking the stage. This year mushrooms have hit the favorite trend. Other elements of foliage and dried florals are part of this new décor. The use of warm earthy tones decreases anxiety and stress and is overall more beneficial to the homeowner’s well-being.
These trends seem very familiar as we have seen many of these elements in our past, however, they give way to a personal expression creating a comfortable space. The reflection of a personal story. 2023 will be a new year with a familiar look.
